Tion Green hopes to emerge as Lions reshape backfield

The Lions are in need of backfield help, that much was obvious this season as they just missed out on the playoffs.

Former second-round pick Ameer Abdullah hasn’t developed into an every-down back and the team could look to move on this offseason. Third-down back Theo Riddick is among the best pass catchers out of the backfield in the NFL, but he struggles between the tackles.

Going into this year, I just want no excuses. I want to show guys that I’m trustworthy. That on third-and-1, fourth-and-goal, goal line or whatever the case may be, first down, second down, third down, that they can leave me out there.

The Lions looked elite at times this season, while other games left something to be desired either offensively or defensively. One thing that never looked right was the run game. Some of that can be attributed to the myriad of injuries suffered across the offensive line, but the Lions need a quality starting running back in order to reach their full potential.

I was really surprised that it lasted that long, the older brother of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr told San Francisco’s 95.7 The Game on Monday. They had some success two years ago, so I think that really helped. But their defense had been struggling for the last couple years. He was brought in to fix that. And I think what Derek and what the offense probably bought that staff and bought those guys a little bit of time.

Derek Carr had a great season for the Raiders in 2016, but the team regressed the next year and it was clear his development was at a crossroads. He needed someone to take him to the next level and Oakland decided new head coach Jon Gruden was its man.

Oakland’s 23rd-ranked defense made the decision even easier.

NFL schedule 2017: TV times and live stream info for Falcons vs. Steelers, Saints vs. Chargers

Week 2 of the NFL preseason is underway, and that means more reps for starters. After key players sat out their teams’ openers, this weekend marked the brief returns of the league’s top players. On Saturday night, Tom Brady and Dak Prescott both made their preseason debuts.

That trend might not continue on Sunday, but both games are worth watching. The first will give us a couple of high-profile NFL debuts. In the second, one team will look to break a 10-game preseason losing streak.

The situation was also under extra scrutiny because of who Frank Clark is. While at Michigan, Clark was suspended for allegedly stealing a laptop and later dismissed from the team after being arrested for domestic violence, which lead to an eventual guilty plea to the charge of disorderly conduct. These past issues, along with uncertainty over what exactly happened during the fight, brought further scrutiny to Clark’s actions.

There is a little less uncertainty now, as an attendee at training camp that day had his camera at the ready as the training camp scuffle turned into training camp punch. Scott Granado shared some fantastic pictures that he captured that day.

The first week of the NFL preseason has been an eventful one, with position battles playing out and rookies getting their chances to shine. Things will continue on Saturday evening with three more games on the schedule, featuring varying levels of intrigue.

I think we’re stronger for it, I think we’ve come back better because of it. Unfortunately, it took a bad incident to get that done, and both guys have really bounced back.
